Faculty of Law Twilight Seminar Series - The Regulation of Teaching: Lessons from the UK’s Teaching Excellence Framework
Presented by: Caroline Strevens, Head of School, Reader in Legal Education, Portsmouth University Law School
This presentation will explain the history and context of the Teaching Excellence Framework (TEF) introduced by the UK Government to encourage teaching in universities and colleges, and the details of the metrics used. There are some positives amidst the shifting sands for those like myself who are interested in teaching and learning. As Head of Department for Portsmouth Law School at a Gold rated institution, I will give you a personal view of the implications for academics who might face a barrage of metrics if the TEF were introduced in Australia. These include: pressure to close courses, consistency trumping innovation, the student and their legal rights, constant data interpretation, and more wonderful teaching whilst publishing excellent research!
