Bond University academics and PhD candidates have reached around 7 million readers worldwide by publishing with TheConversation.com. But what is the process for becoming a new author? And what should you know before you ‘pitch’ a new idea to its editors?
Launched from Australia in 2011, The Conversation has become a key global publisher for academics with research that’s relevant to a broader, non-academic audience. Its readers include Nobel laureates, school students, business leaders, prime ministers and presidents.
As of June 2019, The Conversation reaches a monthly audience of 14.8 million users, and 42 million reads through Creative Commons republication.
However only a small proportion of article ideas submitted to The Conversation can be published, as every week, its team of 20 editors nationally receive hundreds of new article pitches and it remains a not-for-profit media outlet.
At this presentation with The Conversation’s Executive Editor, Liz Minchin will share:
- success stories involving Bond academics and others who have written for The Conversation and seen their work have real-world impacts
- practical pitching and writing tips.
There will be plenty of time to ask questions and chat with Liz afterwards.
The Bond newsroom communications team will also be on hand to talk about how they can help with brainstorming ideas for pitches and providing a journalistic edge to academic expertise.
About the presenter: Liz Minchin is a Walkley award-winning journalist and author, with two decades of experience in newspapers, radio and online. Liz runs The Conversation’s national masterclass program, helping researchers polish their pitching and writing skills. Liz is based in Brisbane and regularly spends time at Bond.
