The Bullsharks experienced a stunning return to form at last week’s 2017 Northern Uni Games, achieving Bond’s best result since 2011 and once again taking out the much-coveted Per Capita Championships.
This year’s Northern Uni Games (NUG), which were held in Rockhampton and Yeppoon, were the last-ever regional university games competitions, meaning the Per Capita trophy - which is awarded to the university winning the most pennants per student numbers - will be forever in possession of the victorious Bullsharks.
In addition to taking out the Per Capita trophy, a solid 39 points ahead of our nearest rival, Bond placed fourth overall, behind Griffith Gold Coast, Griffith Brisbane and QUT – an incredible effort for a comparatively small team of just 91 students across 6 sports.
The 2017 NUG highlights included:
- Our mixed touch team were undefeated the entire week to win gold – Bond’s first ever gold medal for touch football.
- Bond’s men’sbasketball team had an incredible week, losing just one match the entire tournament to take out another gold medal
- Bullsharks’ golfer Alexander Richards performed superbly and was rewarded with gold for his efforts in the men’s golf.
- Following a nail-biting final which saw the scores tied with only minutes to go, our women’sbasketball team was narrowly defeated by Griffith Gold Coast to take out the silver medal.
- Our women’s netball team came away with a bronze medal, following a hard-fought final which saw them even with QUT at the end of the third quarter.
- Our women’s futsal team put in an awesome effort to score a bronze medal – Bond’s first-ever medal for women’s futsal.
Bond University team manager, Rebecca Herbert said not even a 10+ hour bus trip could dampen the spirits of the mighty Bullsharks.
“With this being the last-ever Northern Uni Games, we were determined to get stuck in and do our absolute best to ensure the Per Capita trophy remained ours forever.
“I am so very proud of the individual and team performances throughout the week across all the sports, not just those who were fortunate enough to come home with medals,” she said.
“Team spirits were high all week and it was great to see all the teams making a huge effort to support their fellow Bondies at every possible event.
“This was our best result at a regional Games since 2011 and we resoundingly achieved our goal of qualifying for every sport we needed to ahead of the Australian Uni Games in 11 weeks’ time.
“The nationals will be on our home turf this year, and with our team set to be triple the size, the Bullsharks look destined for success. Bring it on!”
The 2017 Northern University Games (NUG) is one of four regional Games held simultaneously across Australia, with a range of sports serving as the qualifying competition for the 2017 Australian University Games (AUG) - which are being held 24-29 September here on the Gold Coast.
