Brown bolsters Bull Sharks' prospects ahead of AON 7s campaign

Written by Bond University journalism student, Andrew Mckaysmith.

The Bull Sharks face off against arch-rivals Griffith University in the first match of their AON Women's Uni 7s campaign, this Saturday.

The University of Queensland hosts the first of four tournaments comprising the series, and Bond is looking to kickoff with a win against the reigning champions.

Madi Schuck has been a part of the Bull Sharks roster since the squad finished runners-up in the inaugural 2017 series.

"We finished ninth last year, so it's tough to crawl out of that bottom tier position, and we've got a tough pool," Schuck said.

"(In our squad) we have a lot of experience and knowledge of the game, and I think that might get us over some younger, fitter and faster girls.”

The addition of Australian rugby sevens stalwart Lauren Brown to the Bull Sharks has bolstered the squad's prospects.

Brown trained with Bond for the first time on Tuesday night, and Schuck believes Brown will play a crucial role in the Bull Sharks' campaign.

"She's an experienced playmaker, and we've got some young and talented girls coming through," Schuck said.

"But having a playmaker that's been involved in the Aussie 7s program and has got a couple of years under their belt, that helps elevate our game.

"Same with Cobie-Jane (Morgan), who's been in and out of the sevens program and is in the Wallaroos at the moment, having her will be a massive asset.”

Utility back Cobie-Jane Morgan has been part of the Wallaroo set up for a decade.

Echoing Schuck's sentiments, Morgan is savouring the prospect of competing and helping mentor emerging players.

"For me, the challenge is in developing the new youth (that is) coming through," Morgan said.

"I'm enjoying giving back my experience.”

The AON Women's Uni 7s series will be streamed via Rugby.com.au’s social channels.
