Research interests

My research and consulting capabilities span a large range of areas including applied statistics, big data, economic models and forecasting and finance. I have published widely in the areas of Statistics, Applied Mathematics, Biostatistics, Bioinformatics and Finance. I have also produced in excess of 80 articles with at least 20% in A* ranked journals.

The University Centre in Actuarial and Financial Big Data Analytics was established under my leadership, to help Bond University establish itself as a significant player in the Big Data and Analytics research space.

Current projects include:

  • Australian Research Council Linkage Grant totalling $267,230 for 'Expenditure needs and drawdown of retirement savings during later life: how important are demographic factors and financial resources.' T. J. O'Neill, P. F. McDonald, M. A. Martin, J. Penm, J. B. Temple, S. Roberts and T. Higgins.
  • Australian Research Council Discovery Grant totalling $300,000 for 'The improvement of climate change investigations by developing and applying innovative evolutionary subset time series modelling using semi parametric sparse patterned approaches.' T. J. O'Neill, R. D. Terrell, J Penm, J Penm, C. C. Li and A. Chen.
  • Australian Research Council Discovery Grant totalling $430,000 for 'Surviving financial crises: a study of the Australian Government securities market.' T. Smith, T. J. O'Neill, J. Ng, B. R. Oliver, K. L. Benson and M. S. Akhtar.
  • Australian Research Council Discovery Grant totalling $210,000 for 'The importance of being politically connected.' Smith, T; Shi, Jing; O'Neill, T. J.; Walsh, K. D.; Benson, K. L.; Tian, G. G.; Wang, Y. H., Mamiza.

Overall, I have collaborated on ten large ARC grants totalling $2.99 million, nine since 2003, of which I was lead Chief Investigator on five; I have also collaborated on seven other externally funded grants.
