What does an average day of university look like for Bond students? Well, the truth is, the 'average day' isn't average at all. Here's what Bachelor of Journalism (CRICOS 063077B)student Jessica Borten does in a day in the life of Jess.Â
6am: Getting ready for the day
As a journo, you’re always on the move chasing interviews and attending exciting events so having a big breakfast is essential to getting through the day. I also spend some quality time with my cat before driving to uni.
9am: Journalism lecture
I love an early start (most days) so I try and score the morning class when registration comes along every semester. Journalism students at Bond study everything from news, feature and creative writing, to podcasting, broadcast production and publication design. Â Â
11am: Break time
Break time is a chance to visit Lakeside and grab a bite to eat whilst hanging out with friends or catching up on some study in between classes. As the Head of Writing at Bound, Bond University's very own student-produced magazine, I edit and source articles and break time is the perfect opportunity to do this whilst soaking up the rays on campus.
12pm: Criminology tutorial
The Journalism degree offers a wide selection of majors – including advertising, film and public relations – and I chose Criminology. Interested in all things true crime? I suggest you do the same. Learn about cults and serial killers in Crime and Deviance in Australia, or study criminal motivations in new subjectExplaining Crime.
1pm: Newsroom work experience
Gaining experience at the Bond University Newsroom is a great opportunity to utilise your news writing skills and even get published on the Bond Blog, news page or in external publications such as The Courier Mail – building a strong portfolio is fundamental for aspiring journalists. The team are welcoming and offer great insight into the media industry. I even have a great view of Varsity Lakes.
4pm: Sky News
Through the Career Development Centre at Bond University, I managed to score employment as a Guest Liaison at the Sky News Gold Coast Office in Southport. My role includes setting up guests for remote interviews and attending press conferences.
7pm: Home to study
After a long day of attending lectures and undertaking work experience, I head home for a quick dinner before working on my assignments and studying for exams. I ensure my bags are packed and ready to go for another day in the life of Jess.
