Study Series | Finding your 'why'

What’s your life’s purpose? It’s a big question, but it’s one you need to take the time to unpack. When you’re powered by a clear purpose, there’s little you cannot do.

Identifying your ‘why’ is arguably one of the most significant steps you can take towards living a fulfilled life.  It can also be one of the most challenging…But we’re here to help!

Follow these four easy steps to help you figure out your ‘why’ in life.

1. Find what makes you come alive

Knowing what inspires you is the first step. You can grow your impact and influence when you connect what you’re passionate about with focused attention.

Civil rights leader Howard Thurmon once wrote, “Don't ask yourself what the world needs; ask yourself what makes you come alive, then go do that. Because what the world needs is people who have come alive.”

It’s about connecting to a cause that’s bigger than you but that is still consistent with you are.

2. Ask yourself: what are your natural strengths?

According to author Sir Ken Robinson, we are in our ‘element’ when natural talent and skill meets personal passion.

When someone is in their element, they’re more productive, they add more value, and they enjoy more personal (and professional) fulfilment.

Pinpoint the things you’re good at coupled with what you’re passionate about. People rarely aspire to ambitions they have no natural talent to achieve.

3. Think about where you add the greatest value

Knowing your greatest strength and where you can add most value can help you focus on the career paths you’re most likely to succeed in.

Ask yourself, “What problems do I really enjoy, and problems am I passionate about solving?”.

4. Decide how you will you measure your life

It is said that people who don’t stand for something, can easily fall for anything.

Deciding how you measure your life means taking a stand for something and aligning how you live your life with it. This will give you a clear purpose that can underpin everything you do.
