Study Series | How to finish the year strong

Congratulations – you’re on the final stretch of your high school education! Or, maybe you're reading this as you approach the end of a semester of university. As you approach the finish line, we wanted to share some tips for studying for those all-important exams and assignments. After all, in the world of universities, we know a thing or two about preparing for an exam!

Do a brain download

There’s a lot going on in your life, so your brain will be full of information. Put everything in your head down on paper. This could be life admin, personal appointments, or tasks you need to complete for school or work. A brain download once a week can help you to clear the clutter, so to speak, and concentrate on getting everything done.

List out your priorities

To plan out your week, or even day, it can be helpful to list the tasks you need to complete in order of priority. Take on one task at a time. You can even plan out your day, allocating time to each task and setting goals to complete the tasks within those timeframes. Don’t forget to cross every item off your list as you complete it (is there any better feeling?!)

Put your phone away

If you find yourself reaching for your phone instead of your planner, or work, put it in a different room for a period of time, or until you complete your next task.  Our phones are great for keeping us connected, but they can also be big distractions.

Be realistic

You can’t study for 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. Be realistic (and kind to yourself) with your study schedule and your goals. Try not to bite off more than you can chew, and leave time for regular breaks and social activities.

Focus on one day at a time

During times of stress, it can be overwhelming to focus on the big picture (or project). Try to take it on one day at a time, breaking your to-do list down into more manageable chunks.

Develop morning and evening routines

Setting up routines or rituals can help you to start each day fresh, and unwind after a big day of study. Whether it’s going for a morning walk, meditating, or having a warm bath at the end of the day, do something that signals to your body – and mind – that it’s time to concentrate, or switch your mind off for the day.
