From alumni starting game-changing businesses, to students (literally) kicking goals in sport, to research breakthroughs, there’s always something happening at Bond. See what Bondies have been up to and explore latest news from campus, the community and beyond.
Bond University has opened a new environmentally sustainable building after forging ahead with construction through the depths of the pandemic. The new Faculty of Society & Design building contains recycled materials including railway sleepers and power poles, has enough solar panels to power 10 homes, and features charging stations for electric vehicles. It completes a long-held ambition to create a collaborative precinct for students of the university’s largest faculty.
The best and brightest of Australia’s high school filmmakers have been named as nominees for the 25th annual Bond University Film & Television Awards (BUFTA). Twenty-one aspiring young filmmakers will vie for the ultimate prize of a full scholarship to study a Bachelor of Film and Television at the prestigious Gold Coast university, while the winner of the Jury Prize will receive a 25 per cent scholarship. Best Achievement Awards will also be handed out in animation, art film, comedy, documentary, drama, experimental and music video categories at a special online ceremony on November 28. Entertainment will be provided by Gold Coast-based singer-songwriter, actress, producer and director Cole Phoenix.
The Bond University Community Outreach Group (BUCOG) has raised $5837 for Camp Quality’s Big Walk for Little Kids campaign, placing them eleventh on the national leader board. BUCOG President, Grace Pucci, says participating in the campaign was a “truly eye-opening experience”. “Knowing that BUCOG was able to bring everyone together to help young children suffering from cancer, and their families, is inspiring and only motivates me and my team to do even better in the future,” says Ms Pucci. “Our Executive Team could not believe how much support we received from fellow Bond students and the local community.”
A former medical student who struggled at university but went on to co-found the Optical Superstore chain has announced new funding for scholarships for Indigenous students at Bond University. Margaret Douglas says she wants to make sure the students receive the support she missed out on as a young woman moving from rural Wangaratta in Victoria to study in Melbourne. The scholarships were announced during NAIDOC Week 2020 celebrations at Bond University.
