Bond University's Actuarial Science program is expanding, following the appointment of two new Assistant Professors with experience working for some of the world's leading insurance and regulatory businesses.
Bond is the only university in Queensland to offer a degree in Actuarial Science, with demand for graduates continuing to climb, following projections employment in the industry will jump by 25 per cent over the next five years.
Assistant Professors David Lau and Sean Elliott join the program with a combined 69 years of experience in the industry, which is based around analysing business data and statistics.
Assistant Professor Lau's impressive resume includes working as Valuation Actuary for SwissRe - the world's second largest re-insurance company, participated in experience study, Group Life Pricing projects in CommInsure, Financial Forecasting System (FFS) Project in TAL - Australia's largest life insurance group and the Australian Prudential Regulation Authority (APRA), which oversees national banking, insurance and superannuation regulations.
Assistant Professor Lau also held the position of Assistant Professor for Actuarial Science at the renowned Heriot-Watt University in Malaysia.
Assistant Professor Elliott recently worked with Hazell Carr - one of the United Kingdom's leading providers of complaint management, skills resourcing and customer management solutions.
Bond Business School Executive Dean, Professor Terry O'Neill, said students would benefit from the wealth of experience Assistant Professors Lau and Elliott brought to the program.
"Students are lining up to gain entry to this program, because there are excellent prospects for employment with above average remuneration and it is a career that can enable them to work for some of the biggest companies around the globe," he said.
"Bond's first class of actuarial scientists graduated at the start of this year, with one student securing a job 12 months before completing the program and another being offered a position within 10 minutes of their interview.
"Due to the demand from both students and employers, and because Bond is the only university offering this degree in Queensland, we have been able to recruit top level teaching staff with experience working for major national and international firms.
