Bond Squad a lifesaver

The biggest names in surf lifesaving including recently crowned Ocean 6 Series champions Ali Day and Georgia Miller come from the same talented pool.

The duo train as part of Bond University’s elite surf squad with fellow superstars Courtney Hancock, Kirsty Higgison and Harriet Brown.

It’s an all-star ensemble aimed at getting results and the targeted training is giving the surf lifesavers an edge over their rivals.

“We have a great environment and we have a high standard of what is expected of the athletes,” said Bond University surf squad coach Brett Carter.

“It’s all about having a positive attitude, being committed and executing the best you can each and every day you show up. That’s what this squad is all about -- attitude, commitment and execution.”

“Ali and Georgia both won the Ocean 6 Series and the Coolangatta Gold, Ali had three victories and a second in the six races.”

“Georgia was ultra-consistent to claim her title.”

“Ali won the world title in Adelaide in November as well.”

The boutique squad has members from numerous Gold Coast surf clubs.

They train together as a unit during the week before competing against each other at various events at the weekends.

It has been providing some friendly rivalries and banter since the squad started at Bond University in 2015.

“We have a mix of surf clubs in the squad,” said Carter.

“They challenge each other, but also really get along. There is a strong comradery amongst the athletes.”

“Our training is all about getting the work done in the pool and making sure their training is specialized and targeted.”

Day and Miller both claimed victory at the Ocean 6 Series this year.
