Meet the dynamic duo nurturing tomorrow's healthcare leaders

Professor Sharon Mickan has been appointed to lead the groundbreaking Healthcare Innovations program at Bond University.

She was previously Professor of Allied Health at Gold Coast Health and Griffith University, and Course Director of Evidence-Based Health Care at the University of Oxford.

In her new role, Professor Mickan will have oversight of an Australian-first program that draws expertise from the university’s renowned Institute for Evidence-Based Healthcare, Bond Business School and the Transformer hub for student entrepreneurs.

The Healthcare Innovations program has three pathways: Graduate Certificate, Graduate Diploma and Master’s Degree.

It has been designed to prepare graduates for the rapid change occurring in healthcare and for those who aspire to hold senior leadership positions within the industry.

Professor Mickan holds a PhD from The University of Queensland, a Master of Arts (Education) with Distinction from Oxford Brookes University, a Postgraduate Certificate for Teaching in Higher Education from Oxford Brookes University, and a Bachelor of Occupational Therapy from The University of Queensland.

She will be supported by another key appointment, Dr Kate Odgers-Jewell, who has been named Assistant Professor of Healthcare Innovations.

Dr Odgers-Jewell was previously the Student Placement Coordinator and Dietitian Clinic Lead at the Institute for Urban Indigenous Health, an innovative Community Controlled Organization which leads the planning, development and delivery of comprehensive primary health care to the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander population of southeast Queensland.

She holds a PhD from Bond University, a Master of Nutrition and Dietetics with Honours from Griffith University, and a Bachelor of Biomedical Science from Griffith University.

The Executive Dean of Bond University’s Faculty of Health Sciences and Medicine, Professor Nick Zwar, said Professor Mickan and Dr Odgers-Jewell took up their positions in July.

“Sharon is one of Australia’s pre-eminent healthcare educators with a track record of implementing evidence-based structural change in live hospital environments,” Professor Zwar said.

“Together with Kate, she will drive our Healthcare Innovations program which has been designed to produce the next generation of leaders for one of the world’s fastest evolving industries.”
