Her career ambition is to be a CEO – and Marion woman Ruby Liptak has taken another step towards making that a dream a reality, after being awarded a Vice Chancellor’s Elite Scholarship at Bond University.

Nine students from around Australia received the fully paid scholarship that recognises academic achievement, extra-curricular involvement and contribution to the wider community.

Ms Liptak, a Westminster School graduate, will pursue a double degree in law and actuarial science at the Gold Coast university.

“As weird as it sounds, I love maths, (and) I also love people, so I wanted to go into a degree that allowed me to satisfy both of those areas which I believe the combination of law and actuarial science does,” Ms Liptak said.

“As a very naive and fresh high school graduate, I see myself in the future being a CEO of a firm - bank, insurance, law, I have not quite thought about where I want to specifically end up but am hoping to flow into the actuary side of things.”

The volunteer lifeguard is involved in the sporting community, excelling in netball, cross country and athletics, surf lifesaving and touch football.

She co-founded a weekly video podcast for the Westminster community and initiated the Westminster Head Shave, raising more than $17,000 for Canteen to support teenagers and young adults with cancer.

“Being a school captain through COVID, when assemblies were discontinued and social distancing became more and more important, it was very difficult to communicate and provide physical support to our peers,” Ms Liptak said.

“My other captain and I decided that producing fun and light-hearted weekly podcasts would be a way to stay connected, while not actually connecting.”
