Overview
Who are Osler Technology and what do they do?
Osler Technology has created an end-to-end credentialing, accreditation and certification system
to allow students and junior doctors to build a credible, objective and competency-based
portfolio that links undergraduates with pre-vocational training and beyond, ensuring our next
generation workforces are well prepared to execute their role. This virtual ePortfolio of clinical skills can be taken with the medical student / junior doctor
through the health system, improving access to teaching opportunities, reducing unnecessary
retraining, maximising their productivity as a new employee and reducing preventable healthcare
errors.Ongoing monitoring of clinical activity and outcomes, benchmarked against a similar cohort
globally, provides the evidence-based comparative data to better facilitate performance review
and enhancement and automatically trigger recertification pathways.Visit oslertechnology.com for more information

Clinical placement coaches
-
Overview
Clinical Placement Coaches (CPCs) are medical practitioners employed by Bond University to provide near-peer support for Phase 2 medical students on placement at specific hospital sites – Gold Coast Hospital & Health Service, Tweed Valley Hospital, The Wesley, John Flynn and Pindara Private Hospitals.
This new initiative launched on 19 August 2024 and was developed after feedback from students, faculty and hospital staff that additional placement-based, clinical support was desirable.
CPCs add to the existing student support services provided by Bond University and our hospital partners. This new program is designed to complement existing clinical supervision. CPCs will liaise closely with Clinical Leads, Clinical Supervisors and placement coordinators and managers and their roles are tailored to individual placements as required.
Student engagement with CPCs assist students transitioning to new placements, increase opportunities to practice generalisable clinical skills with feedback and help to identify learning needs, set learning goals and sign-off WBAs. CPCs can sign a maximum of two WBAs per student per 7-week placement and cannot sign ITAs. CPCs are familiar with the hospital sites and will be trained in bedside teaching and clinical coaching.
CPCs are available to offer teaching, feedback and tailored support for all students at their site, but where there is high demand, they will prioritise students in their first clinic year transitioning from pre-clinical to clinical placements or between public/private settings. CPCs can also assist students requiring academic support.

FAQs
-
What do I do if the student I am supervising is involved in a clinical incident?
If there is an incident involving a student during their clinical placement, please complete the ‘Critical Incident Form’ and return it to Larissa Sattler, Academic Coordinator of Clinical Education at [email protected]. If any internal incident forms are needed to be completed by you or the student, the University will also require a copy.
The Clinical Education support team would like to assist the student to reflect on the incident and identify any risk management strategies needing to be put in place. Please contact your designated Clinical Support person or Larissa and we would welcome the chance to discuss it with you over the phone or in person.
-
What is the significance of the students’ Learning Profile?
Prior to commencement of the clinical placement, each Bond University physiotherapy student will complete a ‘Learning Profile’ and email their educator a copy for their records. This learning profile provides an opportunity for you to get to know your student as a learner, including their preferred learning style and preferred options for receiving feedback.
-
What is the significance of the students’ Learning Contract?
The 'Learning Contract' allows students to set learning goals prior to the commencement of the clinical placement. Students will then outline strategies to achieve these learning goals and how they will evaluate whether they have achieved them. Students will complete the “Learning Contract” and
provide the Clinical Educator with a copy on the first day of the clinical placement. It is recommended that Clinical Educators aim to discuss the learning contract with their student/s during the first week of the clinical placement. At the end of each week, students are encouraged to reflect on their learning goals, revise and update accordingly. -
What is the procedure if a student is sick?
Procedure for students if late or ill:
The student is expected to telephone you, their Clinical Educator (speaking directly to you or a person in authority) at least half an hour before the commencement of working hours. They should also arrange to provide a handover of their caseload for the day as needed.
Students are then required to contact the Academic Coordinator of Clinical Education (ACCE) by phone, text or email and notify them of their absence. This needs to occur on the day of the absence.
Absences of 2 days or more require a medical or health practitioner certificate. This certificate should be submitted to the Subject Convenor of the clinical placement subject within five working days.
If 5 or more days are missed in one clinical placement, the student will need to discuss their individual circumstance with the ACCE. The ACCE will also be in touch with their Clinical Educator to discuss the student’s progress.
-
What should I do if the student I am supervising asks for leave?
Students are advised not to approach Clinical Educators directly to ask for leave. Instead, all absences (planned and unplanned) require the approval of the Subject Convenor of the clinical placement subject who will liaise with the Clinical Educator. Students are required to complete a 'Request for an Approved Absence' form to explain their absence and to demonstrate how they plan to address any learning activities that they have missed, or in the case of planned absence, will miss.
There are several acceptable grounds for requesting approved absences:
- Illness, accident, family bereavement/funeral attendance, special religious occasions and representative sporting events at a state, national or international level (in accordance with Bond University Policy).
- Unplanned absence: Students have five (5) calendar days to submit the required documents, including medical
certificates which must be completed using the approved 'Request for an Approved Absence' form. - Planned absence: Students are required to give a minimum of ten (10) calendar days’ notice in advance of the
scheduled activity/event.
