Professional biography

Dr Amy Bannatyne is an Assistant Professor of Psychology and Phase 1 Student Support Lead in the Medical Program at Bond University. Amy is an early career researcher whose main research interests focus on (i) understanding and reducing volitional (blame-based) stigma in eating disorders using etiological framing and educational interventions, and (ii) improving the identification and measurement of disordered eating in pregnancy, a highly stigmatised scenario. For her PhD research, she developed and validated the Disordered Eating Attitudes in Pregnancy Scale (DEAPS). Amy is also interested in understanding the drivers, facilitators, manifestations, and outcomes of mental health stigma more broadly in health care and tertiary environments.

Research interests

Dr Amy Bannatyne is an Assistant Professor of Psychology and Phase 1 Student Support Lead for pre‑clinical students in the Bond Medical Program. She is a Registered Clinical Psychologist and mid‑career researcher with a strong and steadily advancing trajectory in mental health stigma‑related research across healthcare and tertiary education settings.   Dr Bannatyne’s research focuses on understanding and reducing mental health stigma, including volitional (blame‑based) stigma in eating disorders, self‑stigma and help‑seeking among health professionals and students, and stigma-related barriers to care across diverse clinical contexts. She also has a special interest in disordered eating during pregnancy - a highly stigmatised and under‑recognised area. As part of her PhD research, she developed and validated the Disordered Eating Attitudes in Pregnancy Scale (DEAPS), contributing an important measure to the field.   Methodologically, Dr Bannatyne frequently employs mixed methods research designs and has considerable experience in Delphi methodology, qualitative inquiry, instrument development, and the development and evaluation of stigma‑reduction interventions. She often leads interdisciplinary projects exploring complex psychosocial phenomena and translating research evidence into education and practice. She is the Co‑Lead of the Collaboration for Research in Understanding Stigma in Healthcare (CRUSH) within the Faculty of Health Sciences & Medicine - a multidisciplinary group dedicated to improving healthcare experiences by addressing stigma through research, training, and the implementation of evidence‑informed initiatives.   Dr Bannatyne has been recognised with multiple awards for her contributions to research and education, including the Australian Psychological Society’s Elaine Dignan Award for advancing women’s health, the Faculty of Health Sciences & Medicine Teaching Excellence Award (2022), and the Bond Medical Program’s MD Supervisor of the Year (2024–2025).
