The Bond senior women prevailed in a tough Anzac round arm wrestle to secure a two-goal victory over Coorparoo on Tuesday.
It was a high intensity game with both teams showing hunger and aggression towards the ball and each other.
Space was at a minimum, goals were hard to come by and every possession counted for the Bull Sharks in their 4.5 (29) to 2.5 (17) victory at The Canal.
Coorparoo put up a strong fight and had the hosts on wobbly legs in the third quarter before a defiant final quarter from the Bull Sharks set the teams apart.
Talking points:
It was quite a low-scoring game for the first two quarters with the half time score sitting at 10-2, Bond’s way.
After scoring their first goal halfway into the third quarter, Coorparoo followed up with multiple behinds to temporarily grab the lead.
But Bond fought back with consecutive goals to put some distance between the teams and win the game by 12 points.
Who’s hot:
They say the best things come in small packages and forward pocket rocket Shannon Nolan played an excellent game as she zoomed across the field, putting herself in all the right places for contested marks and assists.
Tara Harrington was another outstanding player in Bond’s forward line who wasn’t afraid to put her body on the line to take marks. She booted two vital goals.
Courtney Sexton also played an exceptional game in Bond’s back line, taking great intercept marks and really applying the pressure around Coorparoo’s 50 line.
What it means:
Despite their commanding lead in round 1, this low-scoring match has dropped Bond down to second on the ladder behind Southport who have overtaken them on the percentage calculation (points for/points against).
What they said:
Bond University Director of AFL and senior women’s coach Andy Lovell was pleased to see the Bull Sharks rise to the challenge against Coorparoo and put up a strong game in the end.
“They’re definitely a really good team. They were well-structured and their contest was good so that was a challenge for us in the beginning,” he said.
“They dominated us for the third quarter, but we responded really well, scored two late goals in the third and then I thought our last quarter was outstanding.
“So it was a thoroughly deserved win.”
