A new generation of Bull Sharks will be chasing glory as their Women’s University 7s campaign begins in Adelaide on Saturday.
Bond head into the competition, formerly known as the AON University 7s, as reigning champions.
They’ll be without last year’s star players - sisters Madison and Tegan Levi - who are now part of the Australian 7s squad, but a refreshed side will be looking to pave their own path to success.
Where will it be won
The Bull Sharks are keen to come out strongly in the first tournament, setting the tone for the three-leg competition.
Coach Lawrence Faifua has been pleased with the willingness of the group so far.
“We have had heaps of players coming down to training and have a really good mix of experience and youth involved, so this weekend will be good to get the combinations underway,” Faifua said.
The Bull Sharks will have a target on their backs heading into the new season but that’s no concern for Faifua and his squad.
“There’s no pressure for us, it’s just business as usual. Top four is what we are aiming for but it’s no secret within the team we are going out there to win,” he said.
Team news
Faifua has split the selections down the middle for the first tournament with six experienced members of last year’s championship team and six debutants.
Returning players include Melanie Wilks and Caity Costello who are backing up after their grand final heroics for Bond University in the 15s season.
Faythe Manera will be another to watch this weekend. Manera has recovered from an ACL injury and will be a key playmaker for the Bull Sharks side.
Another Young talent in the squad is Amahli Hala who is part of the Australian Youth 7s squad.
“Amali has really good feet with an even better goose step. She has speed to burn so we will be looking to get her in some space this weekend,” Faifua said.
The Bull Sharks kick off their campaign at 10:40am against the University of Melbourne with every game to be broadcast live on UnisportTV.
