The Bull Sharks have produced another AFLW player with Meara Girvan selected by the Gold Coast Suns in this week’s Supplementary Draft.

Since its inception, Bond’s women’s program has produced more AFLW players than any other club in the country.

The tough as nails defender becomes the 24th player to be drafted onto an AFLW list from the Bull Sharks.

The South Australian was taken with pick ten after catching the eye of Suns recruiters across a standout pre-season which saw the Bull Sharks go through the Coolie Cup lighting carnival undefeated and then record a strong win over QAFLW powerhouse Southport.

The 25-year-old is back to her best after suffering a broken wrist last season.

The 176cm defender, who also has an elite netball background, is renowned for her 1-on-1 contested work and ability to the read the play and will be a strong presence inside the Suns defensive 50.

Bond Director of AFL Andy Lovell said although Girvan would leave a giant hole in the Bull Sharks QAFLW side, the club were delighted she had earned a call up to play at the highest level.

He said it was exciting that her elevation would now provide an opportunity for another young Bull Shark.

“We aim to provide an environment that gives our players every chance to get them best out of themselves,” he said.

“Meara’s form throughout the pre-season has been excellent and it was always only a matter of time higher honours beckoned as she well and truly deserves to be on an AFLW list.

“We celebrate her success, but we also look forward to seeing which of our younger players can make the most of the opportunity her departure has created.’’
