Lessons learned in loss to the Blues

Shaun Hart

The Bull Sharks receive some honest feedback after coming away from Coolangatta with a case of the Blues following losses in both seniors and reserves.

Liam Viney’s continued run of form was a rare highlight on a tough day.

Bull Sharks lost 12.9 (81) to 9.11 (65).

Best: Liam Viney, Felix Packer, Nick Bare, Mitchell Dell, Nathan Rataj, Oliver Burrows-Cheng.

Where was it lost:

Historically Coolangatta is a challenging away ground to win at given its size and the quality of the opposition. We knew that although didn’t play the way we should have. They had a midfield that were totally dominant all day and gave their forwards terrific looks which reflected on the scoreboard. We never really challenged the opposition, and the Blues were in control all day.

The Highlight:

There wasn’t many team or individual highlights. It was a very scrappy heavily contested game with few free-flowing transitions of play. Once again Liam Viney was a standout and is in rare form so he would have been an individual highlight worth noting.

What made you happy:

The group was soundly beaten in all departments on the day, although they did show fight until the end. We do have quite a deal of character in the group and belief which was represented in a losing side. The one positive that although not much went our way, we continued to show great effort and tried to win the game and there was no hint that we were willing to concede.

Bull sharks Footy:

We scrapped and fought hard although were outmuscled and outplayed all day. To match it with the top few sides we need to find a way to match them in these areas. There will be some terrific learnings out of the game with an honest review coming for the players this week. These types of games can sharpen your focus to become better as they sting.

The work to do:

We have to understand where we need to get better and train it hard. There’s no secrets, we drifted away from what we do well and paid the price. We have some work to do although we play the top side next week so what better opportunity to showcase this.

Trademark Player:

Liam Viney battled all day and worked his backside off. He has the ability to break lines and use the ball very effectively. He was a standout again this week.

Reserves

Bull Sharks lost 8.3 (51) to 7.7 (49)

Best: Ryan Cook, Harrison Black, Blake Spencer, Jack Mitchell, Adam Forward, Aaron Boundy.
