Maroochydore draws out the best of Bond

by Holly Slattery

A nail-biting 15-all draw marked the halfway point of Bond’s QAFLW campaign when they came up against Maroochydore on Saturday.

The teams were tightly matched in the first quarter which concluded with eight points on the board for both sides and stayed that way for a scoreless second quarter.

Bond went into the final 20 minutes with one point on Maroochydore but the home team kicked a minor goal with minutes left on the clock to level the final score.

The Bull Sharks worked cohesively across the field and back line players Wallis Randell, Jess Maher and Caitlin Thorne took out players of the match alongside Annie Muir, Paris Lightfoot and Georgia Hutton.

The women’s reserves kept their victory streak rolling in an earlier rout against the Sunshine Coast team at Neil Upton Oval, prevailing 63 to 22 to secure their ninth consecutive win of the season.

The team were slow to find their feet with Maroochydore holding a six-point lead after the first quarter, but the Bull Sharks staged a double-digit comeback in the second period.

It was a rewarding day for all Bull Sharks teams who kept morale high, travelling together by bus for a long day at the Sunshine Coast.

Head coach Luke Mansbridge was amazed by the teams’ effort and commitment to the game.

“Bus leaving at 9.45am and getting home after 11pm, waiting around for our games and then playing footy in between is massive,” he said.

“It was truly a massive club effort.”

Both men’s QFA games were washed out after weeks of rain rendered the Coolangatta fields unplayable, and details of a rematch are still to be determined.

It has been confirmed that the women’s postponed games against Southport, originally set for last weekend, will now be played on June 25.
