Massive victories launch Bull Sharks into QFA finals

afl
Riewoldt Family AFL Excellence Scholarship holder Tom Ferguson kicked seven goals against the Magpies

The Bull Sharks will again be key players in AFL Queensland's post season with all four of the sides in Bond's Director of AFL Andy Lovell's program advancing through to the finals.

The QFA finals begin this week and the Bull Sharks seniors and reserves tuned-up with massive 100 plus pot wins.

In week one of the QAFLW finals the seniors trumped Coorparoo while the reserves fell a point short of Southport.

QFA

Bond v Coomera at Coomera

Bull Sharks won 24.7 (151) to 3.3 (21).

Goals: Ferguson 7, Lancaster 4, Viney 3, Furphy 2, Spencer 2, Trew 2, Ayton, Bowen, Cadle, Dell.

Best players: Tom Ferguson, Liam Viney, Mitchell Dell, Kain Ford, Ted McKimm, Hamish Furphy

Where it was won:

Both Teams, (Reserves & Seniors), played a game style that from start to finish was of the highest order. This was represented on the scoreboard with both teams winning by well over 100 points in the end. The senior team started the game well and never looked back kicking goals at will and playing a disciplined team focused approach which made coach Hart very happy.

The highlight:

We bought in several players who hadn’t played much senior football this year and they all played a significant role in the win. The standout was Will Blyth who played his first senior game for the year and did a terrific job. A big strong midfielder certainly added to the mix and didn’t look out of place at all.

What made you happy:

The way the team remained disciplined all day and finished the game off well. In games like this sides can easily become undisciplined and selfish; this wasn’t the case for our teams on the weekend we played the games right out and ended up with a massive scoreline in both grades.

The work to do:

We still have work to do with some of our transition. At times we take the wrong option which will work against us when we come up against a quality outfit. We have been better in this area over the last few weeks although we need to train it again this week.

Trademark player:

Once again Liam Viney was the standout and was the Trademark Player of this week. He has been in rare form this year and was sensational again on the weekend.

Reserves

Bull Sharks won 21.10 (136) to 3.2 (20)

Goals: White 5, Burquest 3, Eyers 2, Peeters 2, Quin 2, Lanham

Best Players: Nathan White, Ned Spiden, Adam Forward, Joshua Clark, Seth Burquest

With Andy Lovell.

QAFLW

Bond v Coorparoo

Bull Sharks won 10.8 (68) to 2.3 (15)

Goals: Harris 3, Davies 2, Balcombe, Calleja, Evans, Parker, Salisbury

Best Players: Nyalli Milne, Paris Lightfoot, Shannon Nolan, Bronte Parker, Charlotte Taylor, Sophie Balcombe

Where it was won:

Coorparoo threw everything at the girls physically in the first quarter. Our girls stood firm and really stepped up to score four goals in the second term and get the game under control. Our balance of attack and defence was very good.

The highlight:

Havana Harris
Havana Harris

Havana Harris’ first quarter goal was a brilliant individual effort where she won a contested ground ball and kicked truly from tight on the boundary.

What made you happy:

I was really pleased with our discipline and resilience against a fiercely competitive opposition. And we opened up the ground on offence really well.

The work to do:

We were a bit fumbly in contests and turned the ball over by hand at times, so we need to focus on handballs under pressure and be cleaner on ground balls below our knees.

Trademark Player:

Paris Lightfoot dominated across half back in contests and her third player in support for her teammates was super. She bounced out of the defensive 50m with speed and help set up countless attacks out of our back half.

Reserves

Bond v Southport.

Bull Sharks lost

4.3 (27) to 4.2 (26)

Goals: Bevan, Iverach, Kendall, Lowe

Best players: Andria Heard, Sarah Heptinstall, Grace Ella, Tobi Chapman, Jasmine Single, Isabelle Lowe

With Andy Lovell.
