2023 John Eales Excellence Scholar Harry Bell in action for St Josephs' College

Bond University rugby’s front row stocks are set to be boosted with Australian Under 18 rising star Harry Bell awarded the John Eales Rugby Excellence Scholarship.

Bell, who recently graduated from renowned Sydney rugby nursery St Joseph’s College, will make the move north to pursue his rugby ambitions and study a Bachelor of Exercise and Sports Science.

His first encounter with Bond University came during a school visit.

“During our school season we travelled to Kingscliff for a rugby camp and were offered the chance to train at Bond. It was the first time I’d heard of Bond. I was really impressed by the place,” he said.

Bell comes to Bond as genuine all-rounder. In addition to his prodigious rugby talents and academic achievements, he was also an exceptional schoolboy water polo player and swimmer.

“Water polo was something I was keen on pursuing purely for mobility and fitness. Similarly, swimming provided the same benefits. I was always very focussed on rugby, but swimming and water polo both have a significant place very close to my heart,” he said.

Harry is the cousin of Wallabies front rower Angus Bell. Angus, and his younger brother Hugh – also a talented rugby player - have played a big part in Harry’s journey thus far.

“Angus and Hugh have been great influences on me,” he said. “They’ve always been people I’ve admired both on and off the field and it’s great to have them available for any advice.”

Having represented NSW at the National Championships this year, Bell will switch the sky blue for maroon after his selection in the 2023 Queensland Reds Academy. He’ll combine his representative commitments with appearances for the Bull Sharks.

“I’m really excited to play my best rugby for Bond and continue my development through the incredible facilities and coaches there and immerse myself in my exercise and sports science study,” he said. “I can’t wait to get started.”
