GAME12-300: Videogames as Creative Media

Description

Videogames are a major form of creative expression in the digital age, and one of the most significant forms of contemporary popular entertainment. This subject introduces future media professionals to the rapidly evolving variety of commercial and independent videogames as an interactive art form by focussing on game design, style, storytelling and genre.  Students will play and consider a selection of the greatest games ever made to discover videogames inherent characteristics of challenge, experimentation, innovation, curiosity, and pleasure. Through these experiences, students explore the process of game creativity, and develop an understanding of their own creative impulse.

  3. Critically analyse the characteristics of narrative form, game styles and genres of contemporary video games.
  4. Critically analyse the inherent characteristics of challenge, experimentation and innovation within contemporary video games as creative media.
