LAWS77-753: Teaching for Learning Success in Law

Law schools have a responsibility to equip students for practice in the 21st century. Law teachers must be equipped to teach a range of skills in the context of relevant ethics and professional values. Legal educators must also have the capacity to create learning environments that promote student learning success and well-being. This subject canvasses: the skills, values and professional attitudes required by lawyers in 2020; the methods used for teaching, learning and assessing skills and values; a variety of approaches to integrating skills, values and professional attitudes within the law curriculum; the procedures used to evaluate program effectiveness; the institutional rules and routines required to support such a program and the way in which the program is related to, and can be integrated with, other parts of the curriculum – both horizontally and vertically. The subject is developed and delivered with the conviction that lawyers need to be more than knowledgeable about the law and technically competent – they must also be able to employ a range of practical skills, self-regulate, be ethically committed and caring professionals, and be committed to independent and life-long learning.
