SSUD71-309: Building Services

Description

This subject provides an introduction to building services which include electrical, mechanical (HVAC), hydraulics, fire protection and vertical transportation services for medium to large scale, multi-storey buildings. Conventional and alternative systems will be explored with students able to identify, after this subject, the appropriate services to a particular building. Students will be required to undertake investigations of systems and buildings.

Learning outcomes

  1. Identify the components of conventional engineering systems in buildings, and have the ability to articulate their function, detail their operating process and the discuss the issues involved in their design.
  2. Evaluate with well developed justification appropriate systems for various building scenarios.
  3. Estimate the space occupied by building services installations and critically assess where they are best placed in buildings.
  4. Describe and discuss the life-cycle issues associated with engineering services in buildings; costs, lifespan, energy use and consequent environmental impacts.
  5. Through critical analysis identify alternative systems for meeting the needs of building users/occupants that are currently met by conventional engineering systems.
