Bachelor of Biomedical Science

A laboratory technician typically performs routine tests, and duties may involve the preparation of specimens. Many will work under the supervision of a laboratory manager. They also typically work under the laboratory technologist where they can assist in more complex laboratory tests such as testing for bacteria in body fluid samples, making cultures of tissue samples, and measuring compounds such as cholesterol or glucose in a patient’s blood sample.

Clinical trials researchers are responsible for conducting clinical trials, recruiting, and screening patients, maintaining patient care, and submitting findings upon completion of the trial; all the while ensuring they are being ethical, performing proper clinical practice as well as following strict rules and enforcing regulations.

Research scientists can work in almost every area of science. They are responsible for designing, undertaking, and analysing information from controlled laboratory-based investigations, experiments, and trials.

Pathology is a branch of medicine that determines the cause and nature of diseases by examining and testing body tissues (from biopsies and pap smears for example) and body fluids (from samples including blood and urine). Your role within Pathology can vary from being a laboratory assistant, medical typist, medical technician, medical scientist, or a pathologist, depending on your choice of further study.

Graduates of the Bachelor of Biomedical Science program can also undertake research-based honours studies.
