Andrew Utting – Baseball – 2004
Bachelor of Biomedical Science
Andrew Utting arrived at the 2004 Athens Olympics as an underdog in every sense of the word. He returned with a silver medal, two runs in the gold-medal match and memories to last a lifetime.
Alongside brother Ben, Utting had played five years in Australian baseball’s minor leagues and more than a decade for the national team. A catcher and handy batter, he had also played for a range of teams across the United States and Japan.
His crowning glory came in 2004 though. While Australia’s baseballers had qualified for the previous two Olympics, they had finished no higher than seventh and were now up against powerhouse nations such as Cuba and Japan.
After securing a coveted spot in the knockout round, Australia produced the upset of the tournament to take down first-placed Japan but was unable to repeat the dose in the final against Cuba. Utting ended up scoring six runs at the Olympics, including his team’s only scores in the final.
Armed with a Bachelor of Biomedical Science and Masters of High Performance Science from Bond University, Utting has gone on to carve out a career as a high performance specialist and worked with leading sports organisations including AFL’s Gold Coast Suns, Cricket Australia and Softball Australia.
