Financial decision making is a core life skill, essential for a comfortable lifestyle. But with constant changes to the way people make purchases, an ever-increasing number of choices, the complexity of investment options, and the rise of sophisticated scams, financial decision making can be stressful.

This course is designed to provide you with basic tools and knowledge to assist you in navigating life financially. Through a range of interactive resources and activities, you will explore a number of topics and concepts, including savings and compounding, scams, superannuation, insurance, and investment options like shares, cryptocurrencies and NFTs.

For-credit subject

This experience can provide credit towards a university subject. Contact us to find out how students can complete five experiences and apply for credit for one 10cp subject into a Bond University undergraduate degree and obtain two points towards their Queensland Certificate of Education.

  • This course is delivered via nine online modules and a one-day practical workshop covering the following topics:

    • Introduction to your personal financial future 
    • Building a budget
    • Savings options
    • Making smart consumer decisions
    • Responsible borrowing and debt management
    • Introduction to investing
    • Planning for the future
    • Ethics and social responsibility in finance
    • Putting knowledge into practice

    Students will then develop their own personal financial plan throughout the practical workshop. 

    Designed for: High school students in Years 11 and 12 

    Delivery: On campus/online

    Learning time: A total of 25 hours of learning, consisting of: 

    • 9 hours of online modules on the Bond Learner platform
    • 6 hours face-to-face on campus
    • 9 hours of additional readings and assessment

Meet your educator

Dr Simone Kelly

Dr Simone Kelly is an Associate Professor of Finance at Bond University. Simone graduated with a B.Com with first class honours and has earned her ACA qualifications while working in the corporate advisory and audit departments of major Chartered Accounting Firms. She received her Doctorate in Real Options applications to the equity of mining corporations from the University of Queensland. She was a co-author on a leading Australian Corporate finance text and currently teaches corporate finance. Simone has received teaching awards from both Bond University and the University of Queensland. Simone’s research interests include real option valuation, security valuation and financial analysis and corporate governance and alignment with corporate strategy. Dr Kelly is currently an editor of Accounting and Finance one of Australia's leading scholarly journals. She has published in the Quarterly Review of Economics and Finance, Accounting and Finance, World Journal of Social Sciences, the International Review of Business Research.
