BUHMUN: Opportunities at Bond

BUHMUN aims to ignite a passion for global change in high school students, inspiring them to explore further studies in fields such as international relations, law, and journalism. Through engaging in discussions and real-world problem-solving, BUHMUN offers a glimpse into the dynamic learning environment at Bond University. Students who participate may find themselves drawn to the university’s programs, including a Bachelor of International Relations, a double degree in International Relations and Law, or Journalism. Within these courses, a range of enriching extracurricular opportunities and programs are available to equip students with the skills necessary for a global-minded career.

The BUHMUN Newsroom is a dynamic, student‑run newsroom that mirrors the real role of the global press at the United Nations.  BUHMUN student journalists learn the fundamentals of interviewing, news writing and mobile photography and videography, then cover the BUHMUN proceedings. Together, reporters chase tip‑offs, interview delegates, file breaking updates, craft stories, edit content and publish live coverage directly to the BUHMUN audience.

By reporting on committees and crises as they unfold, BUHMUN reporters experience firsthand how journalism supports transparency and accountability within institutions of power. The experience is an authentic insight into future careers in journalism, social media, communication, film and TV and other creative arts, while also building storytelling skills that are valuable far beyond the newsroom.

Bond's International Summitry Program

A program available for select students studying international relations at Bond:

The International Summitry Program at Bond University is an exclusive program that equips students with the skills to navigate global diplomacy through theoretical study and hands-on simulations. Students explore the history, significance and impact of international summits while developing critical negotiation, communication, and strategic thinking abilities. Students then bridge theory to practice by planning and running the Bond University High School Model United Nations 2026, gaining real-world experience in diplomacy and global governance. As part of the program, selected students also have the opportunity to compete at the Japan English Model United Nations in Japan or the World International Model United Nations in New York City.

  • Lilika Yamada

    Secretary General

I joined the International Summitry Program to gain practical diplomatic experience through its conferences in Japan and New York, direct engagement with practitioners, and unique learning curriculum. Its forward-thinking, immersive curriculum supports my Indo-Pacific connection as a New Colombo Plan scholar and strengthens the skills necessary to become a public servant and work in a multilateral organisation.

  • Indigo Cheetham

    Deputy Secretary General

I applied to the ISP to expand my worldview and get hands-on experience in a field I have always found fascinating. The opportunity to expand my leadership and teambuilding skills has been amazing but the highlight has definitely been spending time and building connections with the wonderful people I have met through the program.

  • Grace Purnell

    Under Secretary General (Conference Management)

I wanted to be involved in the International Summitry Program to deepen my understanding of global diplomacy and gain practical insight into how international negotiations and multilateral decision-making operate. The opportunity to engage with complex global issues and develop skills in leadership, negotiation, and international cooperation strongly aligns with my academic and career aspirations.

  • Gavril Tan

    Assistant Secretary General (Conference Management)

The International Summitry Program stood out as a unique and invaluable opportunity to engage directly with experienced diplomats and industry professionals, deepening my understanding of diplomacy in both practical and strategic contexts. The program's practical approach and international conferences provides meaningful cultural immersion that equips me with the necessary skills to operate in multilateral organisations.

  • Abbey Stapleton

    Conference Management Member

I wanted to be part of the International Summitry Program because I genuinely enjoy meeting new people, building meaningful connections and learning about cultures beyond my own. Its emphasis on hands‑on engagement, global awareness, and practical diplomatic skills stood out to me as an exceptional opportunity to grow both personally and professionally.

  • Eloise Sheridan

    Conference Management Member

With a passion for language and culture, I am deeply interested in the human dimensions of diplomacy. I was drawn to the International Summitry Program as an opportunity to move beyond classroom theory and gain practical experience in negotiation and diplomacy, developing an understanding of the nuances that cannot be fully captured in academic study. I was equally excited by the program’s cultural immersion and the prospect of engaging with diverse perspectives in an international setting.

  • Indigo Miller

    Conference Management Member

The International Summitry Program is an unparalleled opportunity to step into an environment that simulates the career I hope to pursue. It allows me to collaborate with like-minded people, network with professionals worldwide, and challenge myself to make an impact on BUHMUN’s 10th Anniversary!

  • Lily Boyd

Under Secretary General (Information & Communications)

I applied for the International Summitry Program because I am eager to develop the cross‑communication skills essential in our increasingly interconnected world. The ISP offers a valuable opportunity to deepen my understanding of myself, which is fundamental to building meaningful connections and collaborating effectively with others in a global context.

  • Holly Pallin

    Information & Communications Member

I was drawn to the International Summitry Program because it provided the chance to experience real-world diplomacy. The opportunity to meet with professionals in the field, gain first-hand experience in cross-cultural negotiations, and step out of the classroom makes this program invaluable in its practical application.

  • Sam Kenny

    Information & Communications Member

Back in high school, I would have loved the opportunity to join a Model UN and debate with students from other schools! I’ve also always been fascinated by diplomacy and the UN’s role in bringing people together to solve global challenges.

  • Samara Ballinger

Under Secretary General (Economic & Social Affairs)

Having the opportunity to meet senior diplomats, ambassadors, and United Nations officials through the International Summitry Program's tour to New York has redefined my understanding of global collaboration. Going into BUHMUN, I am excited to share these lessons with younger students and empower them to learn and grow.

  • Faith Cash

    Economic & Social Affairs Member

I wanted to further enhance my understanding of diplomacy and its inner mechanisms. I also wanted the opportunity to participate in an international conference to hone my people-to-people and cross-cultural capabilities.

  • Laura Marsh

    Economic & Social Affairs Member

I have participated in a couple of Model United Nations (MUN) programs, including one in New York. These experiences showed me how MUN connects young people from across the world to share ideas, challenge perspectives, and engage with global issues. I’m excited to help give the next generation of students an incredible MUN experience at Bond University!

Olivia Rankine

When I attended BUHMUN as a student in 2018, I had very little understanding of the UN system or multilateralism but my experience at the conference sparked a passion for international relations that saw me study at Bond, contribute to the future of BUHMUN as Secretary-General in 2023, and join the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade. Now in my work as an international lawyer, and as I prepare for my first diplomatic posting, it is clear to me how the skills I learnt at Bond have contributed to my role in the foreign service. My advice to anyone considering BUHMUN is to dive in, regardless of experience. You never know where it might take you!
