National High School Mooting Competition

Step into the role of a lawyer

The National High School Mooting Competition, hosted by Bond University's Faculty of Law, gives Year 11 and 12 students the chance to step into the role of a lawyer and experience real courtroom advocacy. It’s an exciting and challenging opportunity to build confidence, sharpen legal reasoning and public‑speaking skills, and explore what studying law is really like. The competition, established in 1989, offers a unique, hands‑on taste of law school and the world of legal practice.

what is mooting

What is mooting?

Mooting is a simulated court hearing where students act as lawyers and argue a legal problem before a judge. The case is fictional, but it’s designed to feel realistic and is usually set during either a trial or an appeal. Students work in teams of two or three to present legal arguments, respond to questions from the judge, and challenge the arguments made by the opposing team. It’s all about thinking on your feet, communicating clearly, and applying legal principles to the facts of the scenario.

Importantly, mooting is not judged on who “should” win the case. Instead, judges score teams on their advocacy skills—how well they construct persuasive arguments, how effectively they use the law, how clearly they speak, and how confidently they respond to questions.
