Bond University High School Model United Nations (BUHMUN) conference

Shaping our future leaders

Every year, Bond University hosts BUHMUN, a High School Model United Nations two-day conference. This summit aims to provide an opportunity for secondary students to enter the world of modern diplomacy, representing a country’s position in simulated international debates. Students will collaborate and participate in dialogue to develop resolutions to the world's most pressing issues.  

BUHMUN is an immersive, exciting, and informative experience for secondary students to learn about international relations. It is designed to inspire and shape the future leaders of tomorrow. 

The 2025 BUHMUN experience

The 2025 BUHMUN conference invited students to step into the shoes of international diplomats, tackling one of the most urgent challenges of the 21st Century: how to grow the economy, without jeopardising our planet’s ecosystems. Focused on SDG 8 – Decent Work and Economic Growth – and SDG 15 – Life on Land, delegates balanced creating opportunities for citizens and protecting the ecosystems that we depend on. Across a range of committees, students proposed bold ideas and considered diverse international perspectives, learning firsthand what it means to negotiate and collaborate on the global stage. For many students, BUHMUN 2025 opened pathways into future study practice of diplomacy: international relations, journalism, or law. 

A Decade of Diplomacy: BUHMUN Gala

The gala will take place in the University Club, where we look forward to welcoming current delegates, alumni and distinguished guests for an evening of reflection, celebration and forward vision. BUHMUN '26

Since 2017, the Faculty of Society and Design at Bond University has been proud to hold and continuously improve this program as Australia’s first university-run Model United Nations for high school students.

BUHMUN 2026 will take place on Tuesday 12 and Wednesday 13 May at Bond University’s Gold Coast Campus.

SDGs and key conference themes

BUHMUN 2026 will focus on two critical sustainable Development Goals (SDGs): SDG 4 - Quality Education and SDG 11 - Sustainable Communities. Delegates will explore how technological advancement can be harnessed and regulated to enhance human development, protect cultural heritage, safeguard civilians and critical infrastructure, and build inclusive, resilient communities. 

BUHMUN 2026 provides a platform for forward-thinking policy debate and practical innovation. Ultimately, our goal is to empower delegates to transform these global risks into a Digital Renaissance, building a future that benefits people, communities, and the planet. 

What is a MUN?

A Model United Nations (MUN) is a simulated sitting of the United Nations wherein students adopt the role of a representative for a specific country. Each student represents the interests of their adopted country as the conference deliberates significant global issues. Throughout the MUN, students can expect to provide opening statements, negotiate with their colleagues on potential solutions, and ultimately come to a consensus on a resolution, all while ensuring their country’s voice is heard.

  • This is my fourth year doing BUHMUN and I can’t speak highly enough of the event. Within the curriculum we only have a small amount of time that we can look at the Sustainable Development Goals. So, it allows students to extend what they learn at school and also interact with other students that share the same interests and passions.

BUHMUN over the years

Since its inception in 2017 with just 30 delegates, the Bond University High School Model United Nations (BUHMUN) conference has continued to grow and evolve, becoming one of the most anticipated events on the high school MUN calendar. Each year, the conference has expanded its reach, now accommodating up to 300 students, including both delegates and a dedicated BUHMUN Journalism group. As BUHMUN continues to grow, we encourage new schools to join us in inspiring the next generation of leaders and diplomats.
