About mentoring
-
Who can become a mentor?
To become a mentor, we recommend that you have already completed at least 2 or 3 semesters of study. This will ensure that you have been at Bond long enough to understand how things work and you are best placed to help fellow students.
-
What support will mentors provide?
As a Bondies Connect mentor, you will be required to:
- be able to share knowledge, skills and experiences with others
- have a genuine interest in supporting students, with an understanding and tolerance of human and cultural diversity
- display well-developed communication, interpersonal and negotiating skills
The beauty of Bondies Connect is that you and your mentee can chat about anything you like. It might be movies, books, restaurants, hobbies or even the occasional chat about your studies!
We have found that a wonderful part of the mentee/mentor relationship is getting to know other cultures. You might be from from Sydney (just like Milan) and your amazing mentee might be from Shenzhen in China (like Celine). So it is a great opportunity to learn more about another part of the world and share your experiences.
Also, for some students it might be important that they learn Aussie slang so they are prepared for the work force. So you can teach your mentee all about saying g'day or what a barbie is!

Time commitments
As a mentor, or you may be in contact with your mentees daily, weekly or fortnightly.
You may be asked to be involved in activities during Orientation Week and throughout the semester to help promote Limitless Learning.
-
Training and support
Mentor training is offered to all new mentors to help you to understand the role and commitment of the mentor, as well as the skills necessary to fulfil the role. Mentors are supported by the Program Manager throughout the semester to ensure you have the ongoing guidance you need.
All mentors are required to complete The Mentor Academy which is a Vygo training program to empower a new generation of change-makers.

How do I connect with a mentee?
The Vygo app is set-up that mentees must initiate contact the first chat with mentors. Once a mentee has chosen your profile, they will send you a message on the app to being a conversation.
It is important to note that when a fellow student reaches out to you for support, it may be a huge step for them. So we ask that you respond in a timely manner (within 24 hours if possible). You may need to drive the conversation and ask questions to find out what type of support they need.
You can also book in a virtual or an on-campus session within the app. We recommend having a few of these sessions each semester so you can meet your new mentee and start to build a friendship.
You will get notifications each time you receive a message.
