CONDITIONS OF ENTRY
The BUFTA competition is open to:
a) Australian secondary students enrolled in Year 11 or Year 12, or equivalent studies
and
b) students from pre-approved international schools from selected regions, in Year 11 or Year 12 (Australian equivalent).
Australian secondary students must enter film/s in the following genres:
- Animation
- Comedy
- Drama
- Documentary
- Experimental
- Music Video
- Art Film
or - Sports Film
International students must enter film/s of any of the above genres into the International Category.
- To be eligible for a Scholarship prize you must be an Australian student in Year 12 at the time of your film entry.
- International students entered into the International Category are not eligible for any scholarship awards.
- A student may enter an unlimited number of entries.
- Each entry must be no longer than 10 minutes in length, including titles and credits.
- Entries should be suitable for public viewing and must not contain obscene or offensive content such as adult themes, violence, drug use, coarse language or nudity as judged by BUFTA officials.
- All entries must be submitted via the BUFTA submission portal during the specified entry period.
- Other delivery forms may be accepted if written permission is obtained from the BUFTA Technical Team ([email protected]) at least 10 days prior to the competition close date.
- Film file size must be no larger than 4GB.
- The film file type must be .mov or mp4.
- Australian students named BUFTA finalists (‘Top 24’) will be notified in writing and invited to apply for the Overall Scholarship or Jury Prize Scholarship, and will also be required to submit a Hopes & Dreams video, no later than the specified deadline. A representative from the Office of Future Students will assist candidates with this process (see “Hopes and Dreams” Video).
- Only one person may be the representative of the film. Any prize or requests for publicity will be directed to this person.
- All key pre-production, production and post-production roles must only be undertaken by high school students or high school graduates of no more than 2 years. Older people, parents and film and/or television professionals can mentor and advise students, but not actually perform the roles in any way or actively assist in the performance of the roles. Please note: This excludes actors, who can be of any age.
- Films must have been made during the year of entry.
- Previous BUFTA entries will not be accepted.
- Permission must be obtained from the parent/guardian and teacher of the individual entrant. If consent has not been obtained, the film will be disqualified.
- All submissions must be original (both audio and video material) and must not include material which the entrant does not own the copyright, unless the entrant has obtained suitable copyright permissions (see Intellectual Property).
- At any stage of the competition if a film is found to contain any material which is not original (‘plagiarised’) or infringes the copyright of any third party the film will be immediately disqualified.
- Should an entrant be found to have plagiarised pre-existing copyright material, then any/all awards/prizes will be rescinded and returned to the University.
- You agree to fully indemnify the University against any loss, damage or claim made against them, for any intellectual property infringement by you.
- The quality of the film is the student’s responsibility. The film submitted and received within the entry period is the version that will be judged. No subsequent versions will be accepted after the competition close date.
- The University reserves the right to redesignate films they believe have been improperly placed in a category, to a more appropriate one.
- The University may use films submitted for entry, or excerpts from it for teaching purposes and to promote the competition to the public by whatever means it sees fit. This includes online, print and multimedia. The University retains this right indefinitely despite additional competitions the film may be entered into.
- Entrants may be contacted by media in relation to their BUFTA entry. Entry in the competition is deemed as consent of this.
- The scholarship winner must be willing to be involved in promotional activity arranged by the University. Entry in the competition is deemed as accepting this obligation.
- All decisions of the University and of the judges are final.
- All prizes are non-transferable or redeemable for cash.
- Winners will be announced at the BUFTA Ceremony.
- You agree to comply with all the reasonable requests of the BUFTA organisers.

CATEGORY DETAILS
Definitions of film categories:
Animation: Fictional film which wholly uses drawn or created 2D or 3D artwork or static physical models filmed in such a manner as to create the illusion of physical movement.
Art Film: An exploration of media aesthetics, structures, concepts and themes in a personal and creative way. Filmmakers investigate emotional and intellectual responses, and communicate tone, mood, and meaning, through the representation of conventions, manipulation of codes, and application of technology.
Comedy: Fictional film in which dramatic storytelling uses humour as a central device.
Documentary: Nonfictional film which is intended to creatively document some aspect of reality, involving investigation and research, and presented in a logically unfolding sequence.
Drama: Fictional film in which dramatic storytelling develops realistic, identifiable characters dealing with a range of contemporary social and human issues.
Experimental Film: Often characterised by the absence of linear narrative and the use of abstracting techniques, such as out-of-focus, painting or scratching on film, rapid editing and repetition.
Music Video: The creative exploration of the unity between song, performance, representation and imagery.
Sports Film: Create a short sports story and include the technique of multi-camera live-action, that you have created, within the story. The film can feature a person, a team, or a sporting event.
International Category: Open to international students from pre-approved international schools from selected regions, in Year 11 or Year 12 (Australian equivalent). Films entered into the International Category must fall into one of the following genres: Animation, Comedy, Drama, Documentary, Experimental, Music Video, Art Film or Sports Film. International students entered into the International Category are not eligible for any scholarship awards.

“HOPES & DREAMS” VIDEO
All Australian students named as a Top 24 finalists will be invited to apply for the overall scholarship and will be required to submit a “Hopes and Dreams” video no later than the specified deadline. This video must be between 2 and 3 minutes long and outline your dreams, your story, what sparked your love for filmmaking, what you hope to gain from the BUFTA experience and why you want to win the Major Prize, a full-scholarship or Jury Prize, a part-scholarship to study a Bachelor of Film & Television at Bond University.
(Please note: You are not required to provide a Hopes & Dreams submission until you are named in the BUFTA nominee announcement. You will receive instructions via email as to how to submit your Hopes & Dreams video.)
The ‘Hopes & Dreams’ process does not apply to entrants in the international category, as they are ineligible for scholarship awards.

PRIZE DETAILS
Prizes will be presented to the winners at the Bond University Film & Television Awards Gala Ceremony. The prizes are final, non-transferable and cannot be exchanged or redeemed for cash. Please note that the prizes are subject to change.
OVERALL BEST FILMMAKER SCHOLARSHIP AWARD
The winner of the Overall Best Filmmaker Scholarship award will receive a full tuition scholarship to study a Bachelor of Film and Television at Bond University. This prize is non -transferrable or redeemable for cash. The winner will be required to satisfy the University’s admission criteria and enrol to commence study in a full-time capacity (a minimum of three subjects per semester, normally four) the following year. The Executive Dean has discretion to vary the eligibility criteria. The applicant must fulfil all admission criteria. The applicant is to commence study in a full-time capacity the following year unless the Executive Dean approves a variation to this condition.
This prize covers tuition only and will not provide for accommodation, living expenses, textbooks, consumables, travel or other personal or incidental expenses. The Scholarship is limited to one attempt at each subject in the Bachelor of Film and Television program. If the student fails a subject, the student will be asked to explain their performance. The Executive Dean will consider the explanation and decide whether to recommend the continuation of the scholarship. Termination of the Scholarship will be at the Dean’s discretion after consideration of a written recommendation from the Head of Film, Screen & Creative Media. This decision is final, with no right of appeal.
If the major prize winner is also a category winner and therefore the recipient of a subject award, only one or the other may be used. The overall best filmmaker will be selected by the BUFTA judging panel as having created one or more shortlisted films and showing the greatest potential.
NOTE: The Scholarship will not cover tuition fees associated with enrolment in repeat or substitute subjects.

CATEGORY PRIZES
The winner of each category will receive a prize that will be confirmed closer to the close of the competition. The category award winners will be selected by the BUFTA judging panel as having demonstrated excellent skill and creativity in the relevant category.
CRAFT AWARD PRIZES
The craft award winners will be selected by the BUFTA judging panel as having demonstrated a significant understanding and excellent representation of cinematography, sound design, editing, directing, and screenwriting techniques.
EXECUTIVE DEAN'S CHOICE AWARD
The Dean’s Choice award winner is chosen by the Executive Dean, Faculty of Society & Design. This selection is final.
BEST GOLD COAST FILMMAKER AWARD
The Best Gold Coast Filmmaker Award is given to a student from a high school in the Gold Coast region, as deemed by the BUFTA judges.
PEOPLE'S CHOICE AWARD
The People’s Choice award is given to the student whose film receives the highest number of votes in the BUFTA People’s Choice poll.
BEST INTERNATIONAL FILMMAKER AWARD
The Best International Filmmaker Award is given to an eligible international student whose film is deemed by judges to have displayed the highest overall quality of filmmaking for the International Category. The prize for this award will be announced soon..!

INDEMNITY
The entrant agrees to indemnify Bond University Limited and its respective successors, assignees, licensees, and its respective officers, directors, members, agents and employees and hold them harmless from and against any and all claims, liability, losses, damages, costs, expenses (including reasonable legal fees) and penalties arising out of, resulting from, based upon or incurred because of a breach by a competitor of any statement, representation or warranty made by the entrant in the entry form, including a breach of the copyright warranty below, these procedures and regulations or arising from any negligence whatsoever of the entrant or for any claims whatsoever arising from the film.

INTELLECTUAL PROPERTY
Copyright considerations are the competitor’s responsibility. The creator of the film must own copyright in both vision and sound or have suitable permissions in place and be willing to assign the copyright to the University Limited for the purposes of promotion. Material which has been created by other persons (including, but not limited to photography, stills, footage or music) must have the appropriate copyright free status or permission from the copyright holder. If your film includes recognisable images of individuals, then permission must be obtained from each individual. Permission must be obtained from the parent/guardian of individuals recognised in the film if they are under 18 years of age. If consent has not been obtained, the film will unfortunately be disqualified. Information provided by the entrant may be used by Bond University for promotional or publicity purposes.

JUDGING
The deliberations of the judging panel remain confidential. All recommendations and decisions taken are binding and final. No correspondence will be entered into on such matters.

PRIVACY
The information supplied on the entry and consent form is being collected by Bond University and will be used and disclosed for the purpose of administering and promoting the competition. Your information may also be shared with the judges and employees of Bond University. Your name and film may be disclosed in print and/or electronic form, without additional compensation. Information will also be posted on Bond University websites and other marketing materials in relation to advertising and promotional activities. If the personal information you provide to Bond University is incomplete and/or inaccurate, Bond University may be unable to process this entry. You may access the personal information Bond University holds about you in accordance with Bond University’s privacy policy.
